Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

(Southern California; state park)

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California covering nearly 600,000 acres. The park's territory overlays San Diego, Imperial, and Riverside counties. The name of the park comes from the Spanish explorer, Juan Bautista de Anza, and the Spanish word for sheep- "borrego". This desert park, established in 1933, lies within the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. It's surrounded by the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains. A true nature lover's paradise- Anza Borrego is home to over 600 species of native plants as well as iconic desert inhabitants such as bighorn sheep, road runners, foxes, eagles, jackrabbits, coyotes, iguanas, and many more. With over 500 miles of off-roading trails, dozens of beautiful hikes, and some of the darkest night skies in southern California, there is plenty to keep you busy. Anza-Borrego leaves a lasting impression that will keeps visitors returning for decades.

Also to note, this wilderness area was home to indigenous tribes such as the Kumeyaay which we can still find evidence of today. The Anza-Borrego Visitor's Center has exhibits about the tribes that called these lands home as well as exhibits on the local flora & fauna.

Palm Canyon Trail

This family friendly 3 mile loop trail brings visitors to a secluded palm oasis where bighorn sheep sightings are commonly reported. The terrain is not technical and the elevation gain is a gradual 450 feet. Allow 1.5 hours +/-.

The trail is easily accessed by a nearby parking and is just a few minutes down the road from the Visitor's Center. As always, make sure to have sun protection and water.

The Slot

This short (less than a mile) out-and-back trail is one of the only accessible slot canyons in southern California. As you descend into the narrowing canyon, you will be pleasantly surprised at every twist and turn as you marvel at the geological phenomenon carved by nature's forces over the millennia. This is a great trail for aspiring photographers.

This hike is mostly easy but may not be good for seniors or people who are scared of tight spaces. There are a few points that you will have to turn sideways to squeeze through the canyon walls. Use caution as you navigate here.

Font's Point

This amazing spectacle is best viewed at sunrise or sunset when the colors of the rock turn a reddish orange. Accessed by a dirt road, it is recommended to have a 4x4 vehicle to make the 10-15 minute 4 mile drive from Highway S22. You can also hike to Font's Point from Highway S22 @ 8 miles roundtrip.

However, those that make it to the viewpoint will be rewarded by an incredible vantage point over the Borrego Badlands. This other worldly landscape is a fantastic example of the beauty of the Mojave Desert and it is certainly the most popular viewpoint in Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

Galleta Meadows

Surrounding the town of Borrego Springs, you will find over 100 metal sculptures by Ricardo Breceda featuring dinosaurs, elephants, scorpions, horses, and much more. These amazing works of art are very impressive and are a perfect complement to the local landscape. Constructed from 2008 to 2012, this free exhibit is perfect for families and a good way to end your day after exploring the vast wilderness reserve of Anza Borrego Desert State Park.
